Q: What does backtested mean here?

We tested a year of daily data across 50 stocks, about 10,500 observations. Unusual volume did not reliably predict direction, but it preceded moves roughly 18% larger than normal over the following week.

Q: Why measure everything against the asset itself?

Absolute numbers are dominated by size. Scoring each asset against its own history removes that bias and surfaces genuine change.

What does "backtested" actually mean here?

We tested a year of daily data across 50 stocks (~10,500 observations). Unusual volume did not reliably predict direction — but it preceded moves roughly 18% larger than normal over the following week. We publish that limitation openly rather than hide it.
